Introduction

When I eat, I use chopsticks. I sometimes use a fork for pasta, but if there are other side dishes, I’ll take out my chopsticks. At Japanese-style spaghetti restaurants, you can often choose between a fork and chopsticks, so I use whichever I feel like.

When I was small and couldn’t use chopsticks yet, I ate with my hands. I took a set of chopsticks, a spoon, and a fork to kindergarten. When I entered elementary school, my lunchbox came with a chopstick case. By that time, I could eat almost anything with chopsticks. At home, I sometimes used a knife and fork for Western meals, and I used to eat rice by placing it on the fork. It was probably in high school that I had the opportunity to learn French dining etiquette. I was taught that the silverware lined up in a row should be used starting from the outside. Though I rarely have a chance to use those, except when invited to someone’s wedding reception.

When I eat, I mostly use chopsticks. How about you? How do you usually eat your meal?

It has been 10 years since I began my journey searching for “Chopsticks in life.” I used to think chopsticks were exclusive to East Asia. However, through my travels, I discovered that their use extends far beyond—to Southeast Asia, the Americas, and even parts of Europe. Chopsticks effortlessly cross borders, lightly picking up delicious food wherever they go. Through this photo book, I hope to share these scenes and convey the unique charm of chopsticks.
